Simrad Helm Electronics Upgrade in Port Macquarie

Simrad Helm Electronics Upgrade in Port Macquarie

Posted by Shotgun Shelly on 5th Nov 2026

Some helms just run out of room. Too many switches, a couple of small screens, gaps where old gear has been cut out and patched. This job started exactly like that, and ended with a clean, custom-fitted dash and two 12 inch Simrad displays running the show.

Here is how it came together at the Port Macquarie Marina workshop.

The Job

The boat came in with an older dash full of cut-outs from previous electronics. The owner wanted a proper helm upgrade: big, modern displays, GPS, sonar, an electric motor and a camera, all fitted properly rather than squeezed in wherever they would go.

The equipment was supplied by Shotgun Marine Services and installed by Port Macquarie Marine Services.

A Custom Dash Panel, Made to Fit

Off-the-shelf mounting rarely suits an older boat. So instead of working around the old cut-outs, we fabricated a new dash panel to suit the new screens, then had it powder coated. It sits flush, looks like it came with the boat, and gives a solid base for the electronics.

Two 12 Inch Simrad NSS EVO3S Displays

The main event is a pair of 12 inch Simrad NSS EVO3S multifunction displays side by side. Two big screens let you run charts on one and sonar or other data on the other, without constantly flicking between pages. See the full range on our Simrad brand page.

GPS, Sonar and Camera

  • Simrad GS25 GPS antenna for position data feeding the displays
  • Simrad S5100 sonar module for the fishfinding side
  • Simrad Recon electric motor fitted as part of the package
  • FLIR M232 camera added to the system

Everything is wired, tested and set up in the workshop, so the owner steps aboard to a system that is ready to use.

Why a Workshop Install Matters

Marine electronics are only as good as the install behind them. Clean cable runs, correct power and proper network connections are what keep a system reliable offshore. A qualified technician fitting the gear in a workshop means problems get found at the marina, not out wide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you build a custom dash panel for my boat?

Yes, where the layout calls for it. Bring the boat to the Port Macquarie Marina and we will assess the helm and talk through the options.

Do I need two screens?

Not everyone does. Two displays suit boats where you want charts and sonar visible at the same time. We will talk through what suits how you actually use the boat.

Can you fit a sonar module to an existing system?

In most cases, yes, depending on what you already have. We check compatibility before recommending anything.

Who supplies and who installs the gear?

Shotgun Marine Services supplies the equipment and Port Macquarie Marine Services installs it. Installation is quoted separately.

Do you only work with Simrad?

No. We are an authorised dealer across all the major marine electronics brands and give unbiased advice on what suits your boat.

Where are you based?

At the Port Macquarie Marina, Monday to Friday, servicing boats along the Mid North Coast.
