Marine Sounder & Fish Finder FAQs
What’s the difference between a marine sounder and a fish finder?
They’re essentially the same thing. “Sounder” is the traditional boating term, while “fish finder” is more consumer-focused wording. Both use sonar technology to display depth, structure and fish targets under your boat. Modern fish finder GPS units combine chartplotting, mapping and sonar in one system.
Why do I lose bottom at speed?
Losing bottom when running offshore is usually caused by turbulence across the transducer. Incorrect mounting position, poor angle or aerated water flow can disrupt the sonar signal. A properly installed CHIRP sounder with the right transducer should hold bottom at cruising speed in most offshore conditions.
Is a 1kW transducer worth it?
If you fish offshore regularly, yes. A 1kW transducer provides stronger returns, better depth penetration and clearer bottom definition compared to 600W systems. For deep drop or serious bluewater fishing, stepping up in power makes a noticeable difference.
What’s better – CHIRP or Live Sonar?
CHIRP sonar is excellent for traditional depth sounding and structure reading beneath the boat. Live sonar systems like Garmin LiveScope show real-time fish movement and structure in front of the vessel. Many serious anglers run both for the ultimate setup.
Do you install marine sounders or just sell them?
We do both. We supply marine sounders and fish finder GPS systems Australia-wide and offer professional installation from our Port Macquarie workshop. We’re authorised service dealers for all major brands, so we fit and tune systems properly - not just sell boxes.
