Multifunction Displays (MFDs)

Your multifunction display is basically the brains of the helm these days. One screen can show your charts, sounder, radar, engine data, autopilot

Even VHF info if you want it set up that way. For us Mid North Coast boaters, it means less squinting at half a dozen gauges, quicker spotting fish or hazards, and keeping your head in the game instead of fiddling around while the boat’s moving.

It also makes for a much cleaner dash. No more rat’s nest of old plotters, mismatched screens or dodgy wiring runs — just one proper display doing the heavy lifting.

Modern MFDs are built to handle real conditions too. Bright screens you can read in full sun, fast processors that don’t lag offshore, and solid integration with the rest of your onboard electronics. Whether you’re chasing fish close in, running the bar, or heading out wide, a good multifunction display makes boating simpler and safer.

We’ve run these systems ourselves on our own boats, so we know what holds up in the slop off Port Macquarie and what actually works when you’re out there chasing fish, not sitting at the dock.

Have a browse below and compare options based on screen size, performance and compatibility with your boat.

Frequently Asked Questions – Multifunction Displays

What is a multifunction display?

A multifunction display (MFD) is a marine screen that combines multiple systems into one unit — GPS charts, fishfinder sonar, radar, AIS and engine information — all viewable from the helm.

Are multifunction displays only for fishing boats?

No. While fishos love them, MFDs are just as common on cruisers, centre consoles, sailboats and commercial vessels. They’re about better situational awareness, not just finding fish.

What size multifunction display should I run?

That depends on helm space and how you boat. Smaller boats often suit compact displays, while offshore and commercial setups usually benefit from larger screens or multiple displays for split views.

Can a multifunction display connect to sonar, radar and AIS?

Yes. Most modern MFDs are designed to integrate with sounders, radar scanners, AIS transponders and other onboard systems, provided they’re compatible within the same brand ecosystem.

Are all multifunction displays the same?

Definitely not. Differences come down to screen brightness, speed, networking capability, ease of use and how well they integrate with other gear on your boat.

Do multifunction displays work properly in bright sunlight?

Marine MFDs are built specifically for outdoor use and are designed to stay readable in harsh sunlight and rough conditions — unlike tablets or automotive screens.

Can I upgrade my system later?

In most cases, yes. Many MFD setups are modular, so you can add radar, sonar, AIS or extra displays later as your boating needs change.
